Cars Damaged Onboard in Rough Seas?

Tuesday, January 6, 2009

Cars Damaged Onboard in Rough Seas?

Well, I've still got at least one more post to do on the lack of studied need being established by the PUC and Act 2: A Closed Class of One (Part 5). Will get that up soon. I've been enjoying a break from this. Also, the updated page for seeing the State Supreme Court decision when it comes out is the following: http://www.state.hi.us/jud/2009jan.htm.

But, what brings me back early here from my vacation is the following report today based on yesterday's transit. I must say I have commented many times on this blog about observers wondering what happens to the cars onboard when the vessel is in turbulent water. Particularly, I have wondered what happens to animals and livestock in vehicles down below when the vessel is in turbulent water. I had assumed that they were hook-chaining the vehicles down in four places on the axels, but I guess not. I recommend reading the comments on the following article:

Open Letter From Kanaka Maoli Kupuna to Obama

Dear President-elect Barak Obama:

We, the undersigned Kanaka Maoli (Hawaiian) kupuna (elder
spokespersons), write this Open Letter to you on behalf of many in
our Kanaka Maoli nation who are indigenous to these islands in which
you were born, to welcome you home, with your Chicago ‘ohana
(family), for a well-deserved nanea (rest and relaxation).

We join with millions the world over to ho‘omaika‘i (congratulate)
you on your election and upcoming inauguration as the 44th president
of the United States of America, and to applaud your inspiring
message of Hope and Change for a world in desperate need of a lasting
peace that, we all know, can only blossom with pono (justice).

As you share this season of renewal here with us on O‘ahu, we feel
compelled to direct your attention to the plight inflicted by the
U.S. on our Kanaka Maoli people and lands since 1893 when the U.S.
first invaded our islands. This century-long plight has caused our
people to now suffer the highest rates of homelessness, poverty,
school drop-out, prison incarceration, heart disease, cancer, stroke,
diabetes, hypertension, smoking, alcoholism and drug addiction. Our
people now demand redress, which we respectfully herewith summarize:

1. Our Kanaka movement for redress, smoldering since 1893, erupted in
January 1993 on the occasion of the centennial anniversary of the
U.S. armed control of our homeland, and now grows stronger every day.
This 1893 landing, carried out in shameful complicity with local
haole (white) businessmen, effected the overthrow of our revered

New Year's Resolution...Follow the Bicyclist

New Year's Resolution...Follow the Bicyclist

About a decade ago I visited Kauai for the first time for me. The one key thing I remember from that visit was riding in a van through Hanalei Valley, looking out the window at a pedestrian and thinking to myself "this has got to be the one most likely place in the world, that I have been, where the more logical thing to be doing would be to be a pedestrian or bicyclist rather than being in the car that I am currently in."

That image of Kauai's Northshore stuck with me for more than a decade. Now I am here and I am still looking out the window at pedestrians and bicyclists. It's hard to change, I mean really change. Hopefully someday I will be forced to become a pedestrian or bicyclist on Kauai's Northshore.

PEACE ACTIVISTS IN HAWAII URGE OBAMA TO SPEAK OUT

Pro-Palestinian Protesters at Obama's Hawaii House

by Ross Colvin

KAILUA, Hawaii - A small group of placard-waving pro-Palestinian demonstrators gathered near U.S. President-elect Barack Obama's vacation retreat in Hawaii on Tuesday to protest against the Israeli airstrikes in Gaza.

[Protestor Ephrosine Daniggelis holds a placard in front of U.S. president-elect Barack Obama's vacation compound in Kailua, Hawaii December 30, 2008, during a protest against the Israeli attacks on Gaza. (REUTERS/Hugh Gentry)]Protestor Ephrosine Daniggelis holds a placard in front of U.S. president-elect Barack Obama's vacation compound in Kailua, Hawaii December 30, 2008, during a protest against the Israeli attacks on Gaza. (REUTERS/Hugh Gentry)
Obama has made no public comment on the strikes, which Israel launched on Saturday. Aides have repeatedly said he is monitoring the situation and continues to receive intelligence briefings but that there is only one U.S. president at a time.

Some critics, however, say Obama did choose to speak out after the attacks on the Indian city of Mumbai in November in which gunmen killed nearly 180 people, condemning them as acts of terrorism.

Obama, who takes office on January 20 from outgoing Republican President George W. Bush, has also spoken out on economic issues facing the United States.

"He is talking about how many jobs he is going to create but he is refusing to speak about this," said one of the protesters, Carolyn Hadfield, 66.

Act 2: A Closed Class of One (Part 4)

Revisions on 12/31/08 Begin with the 4th Paragraph Down:

This Part 4 will look at the timing and logistical problems and incompatibilities with the possibility of whether there could be a second 'large capacity ferry vessel' company that could get approval to operate under Act 2. Part 5 of this series will look at how 'need' was and was not estabilished by the PUC, commented on formally by Mina Morita, and how Act 2 subtly altered that PUC conditioned 'need' to at one point what Act 2 calls 'critical' need, regardless of the fact that there was never a formal study undertaken to determine if in fact these designs would satisify any 'need' at all.

Economic Stimulus Projects

Government, industry work together to create jobs
http://kauaiworld.com/articles/2008/12/24/opinion/kauai/doc4951d72909f21...

Published: Wednesday, December 24, 2008 1:10 AM HST
Special to The Garden Island

The current economic climate is affecting people across the U.S. and here at home. Many have lost their jobs and find themselves in an anxious period of uncertainty, especially during this holiday season.

With people’s livelihoods on the line, it is incumbent upon us to work together and take charge of our own destiny. This means a heightened focus on those areas of our economy that are within our sphere of influence.

The State has made accelerating capital improvement projects (CIPs) one of five action steps to help our economy during this difficult time. This is an area over which we, as state and county government, construction industry executives and labor leaders, can exercise a large measure of control.

Investing in construction has a well-documented multiplier effect that benefits a variety of industries and directly supports our goal of getting people back on the job.

By making sure our architects, engineers, construction workers, suppliers and those businesses that are tied to the construction industry have work, we are not only helping them sustain their families, but also infusing money into our economy and addressing the concerns of residents statewide by implementing needed upgrades to our infrastructure.
