Mālama Kaua`i: Keep It Local Campaign - Start Your Own Garden, Sunday, August 31st

We are set to kick off our Keep It Local Campaign with a workshop series starting with the basics: food. The Start Your Own Garden Workshop is made for the true beginner. If you've been waiting for the one class that shows you the ABC's of growing your own food in a home garden, this is the class. The course will be lead by Jenica Springer and Brianna Wilkerson. Participants should bring bag lunch, water, rain/sun gear, gloves and clothes to garden in. This is a hands-on workshop and you will get dirty! Workshop takes place at Mālama Kaua`i which is at the site of the old Guava Kai Plantation, 4900 Kuawa Road in Kilauea.

Start Your Own Garden Workshop:
Sunday August 31, 2008 10am - 3pm

Part 1: Lecture (Roughly 15-20 min. per topic) 10am-12pm

* Raised beds, Container
* Soil Structure
* PH, soil type (clay/sand/silt), lab
* Soil Management
* Amendments
* Compost
* Mulch
* Crop Rotation
* Plotting
* Draw plot on grid paper
* Plant Choice
* Tools

LUNCH: 12:15- 1pm

Part 2: Hands-On / Activity Rotations (Roughly 30 min. per rotation) 1-3pm

* Direct seeding (Demonstration plot)
* Seed trays (adjacent tables)
* Transplanting (Demonstration plot w/ prepared seedlings)
