Vision
Develop tools that build self-reliant and self-sufficient communities.

Strategy
Organize news and information, that describes the benefits of living
in a healthy environment. Incubate green businesses that provide economic opportunities for locals. Develop replicable, on-site
models for appropriate development in the following areas:

Key Community Factors and Goals

Meet Basic Human Needs
Bring community members together to better understand each other and use shared values to create a vision for our future.

Food Security
Develop a food security strategy that provides direct community access to an enhanced local food supply in the event outside food supplies are cut off.

Personal Health
Establish health maintenance and monitoring programs that focus on prevention/lifestyle and reduce dependence on traditional health insurance.

Affordable Housing
Develop an inventory of housing models, materials and systems that are appropriate to our island and available for people of medium and low income.

Energy Security
Provide 100% of our energy from local renewable sources.

Water Independence
Develop strategies and policies that conserve water and provide access to local water supplies.

Waste Management
Establish programs that maximize reduce, reuse, and recycling processes.

Proposed Activities

Information Services/Education
Resource Center - museum, green info library, home products shop, campus wide internet access
Meeting/Education Center - speakers, job training, events, topical movies, classes and community meetings
Offices - media services and administration

Agriculture/Food Program
Soils Lab - organic soil remediation services
High-grade Soil Amendment Production/Sales – mulch, compost teas
Greenhouses - fruit tree propagation (fruit only? – perhaps ‘plant & tree’)
Farmer Incubator Program
Food Processing and Distribution
Commercial Kitchen - Meals, Green Catering
Organic Bulk Dry Good Sales – food security staples

Personal Health
Health Clinic - personal health consultation and monitoring
Fitness/Yoga - cardio, weight training and yoga studio
Bike and Walking Paths – fitness loops with educational signage

Affordable Housing
Demonstrate different kinds of sustainable affordable housing and agricultural worker housing.

Energy Security
Demonstrate efficient use of solar and wind energy systems.

Water Independence
Demonstrate water harvesting, filtering and conserving technologies for consumer use.

Waste Management
Demonstrate reduce, reuse and recycle processes throughout the site.

The Malama Kauai Resource Center is about working at a grass-roots level, understanding shared community needs, bringing people together, and fostering relationships that create self-reliant communities.
