Before you say to yourself that marching in a parade isn't "your thing", I must confess that was my reaction the first time I was asked. I ended up having a ton of fun. Really, it's a blast. The best part is that you're sending a message to everyone that Maha'ulepu is a special place and that you are one of the many people who want to see it remain a wild and undeveloped place. We're hoping to get 100 people in the Malama Maha'ulepu parade contingency and we hope you will help us reach our goal. We'll gather in front of the Koloa Library at 9 AM. On the agenda is a resolution by council-woman Iseri-Carvalho to change the charter. The resolution would require that for a charter amendment to be approved by the voters, the amendment would have to receive 50% of all of the votes cast at the election (rather than 50% of the votes cast on the question). I.e., blank votes on the amendment would be counted as "no" votes. So voters who choose to not have an opinion on a particular matter would have their votes interpreted at "No" votes! There is also ambiguous language regarding the need for the majority to equal at least 30% of the registered voters. This could be interpreted to mean that there must be a minimum of 60% voter turnout for the election results to be valid. (In order to meet the 30% criterion, in a close race, at least 60% of the voters would have to vote on the matter; otherwise getting 50% of the votes would be less than the 30% criterion.) Regardless of whether or not this proposal (if it is placed on the ballot and is approved in November) would be applicable to the CRG Charter Amendment, this proposal appears to be a big impediment to future changes to the charter, regardless of whether the amendment were initiated by voter petition or by the Charter Commission. Ali started the campus peace organization last year in response to several violent outbreaks at her school .She included anti-war programs, offering a presentation on conscientious objector rights and sponsoring war resistor Aimee Allison's visit to her school last February. Ali has also tabled at her school’s career fair on non-military alternatives, military facts, and student rights. In the second part of the program, we will speak to representatives of STOP DAT!, the newly-formed coalition to Stop Disrespectful Air Tourism. ALOHA KKCR AND KEKAHU FOUNDATION OHANA, As some of you may know, KKCR and the KEKAHU FOUNDATION have been meeting since May, working on a Strategic Plan for the next five years. We have been meeting as a closed group to concentrate on all the possible specific visions, strategies and goals that will need to be incorporated into the final plan. At this point, our team is moving out into the Kauai community, conducting open meetings to get input from residents, listeners, members, programmers and volunteers. Our team has condensed our work into six definite categories/topics that are all open for community input. They are: Financial, Conflict Resolution, Governance /Policies, Community Outreach, Facilities/Equipment and Volunteer Program. Team members Marj Dente and Paul Moody, will be conducting and facilitating the Volunteer Program Community Meeting on Saturday, August 2, 2008, 9 AM to 1 PM at the Kapa'a Library Conference Room. The task of our group meeting is to brainstorm how we can best accomplish the following goals, and this is where we need your help: To establish a comprehensive, effective volunteer program with clear policies and defined responsibilities, resulting in broad community support and active participation of a diverse, enthusiastic, reliable, well-trained and committed volunteer team. Public input on HHSC sought today (8/19) by The Garden Island Members of the state Legislature will meet at 5 p.m. today at the Kaua‘i High School cafeteria on Lala Road in Lihu‘e to discuss the Hawaii Health Systems Corporation, a state news release says. The HHSC recently informed House and Senate members that they are facing a roughly $62 million shortfall by the end of the next fiscal year (June 30, 2009). For FY 2009, HHSC will receive a general fund subsidy of $53.6 million. Its annual expenditure for FY 2009 is estimated to be about $400 million from its special fund. Prior to the 2008 legislative session, HHSC requested from Gov. Linda Lingle an emergency appropriation of $14 million for FY 2008 and a $57 million supplemental budget request for FY 2009. The governor provided the emergency request, but denied the supplemental request. The Legislature provided the $14 million emergency appropriation, but could not provide any supplemental appropriation as the Legislature reduced all state department budgets by about 4 percent, totaling $45 million. HHSC was spared from the 4 percent budget reduction. However, in recent weeks, the governor has announced she intends to restrict at least 4 percent of the subsidy provided to HHSC facilities’ operations, the press release says. Public Meetings on Landfill Issues LĪHU‘E -- County officials announce the kickoff of a series of public meetings to educate the public on landfill issues. Beginning August 20, 2008, Public Works staff will be attending Kaleo O Kaua`i meetings to inform the community about landfill related issues, including: the status of the Kekaha Landfill lateral expansion, the status of the project to site a new landfill, requirements for modern landfill design, mitigation measures, host community compensation, and community concerns about landfills.
